​Preparing for winter weather

While Coppellians often enjoy mild North Texas winters, unexpected ice and snow can strike at any time during the season. Be prepared and avoid the wintery weather headaches with the following information and helpful tips from the City of Coppell.​

Emergency Notifications

Weather awareness is key for winter preparedness. The City of Coppell's Emergency Management Department recommends all residents have three different methods of emergency notification such as text or email alerts from NotifyCoppell, a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) All-Hazards Radio, and a smartphone application.​​

Snow Removal and Ice Control

In a winter weather event, the City of Coppell performs de-icing procedures on major roadways within the City limits as well as the parking lots of essential public facilities. Residential streets, sidewalks, and driveways are NOT treated.​


Prep your home, vehicle, and loved ones for chilly temperatures with these basic checklists:​

  • ​Turn off irrigation systems and disconnect outdoor hoses
  • Bring potted plants inside
  • Change furnace filters and have it professionally inspected
  • Check batteries and test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors
  • Clean gutters
  • Have fireplace chimney professionally cleaned before the season's first fire
  • Prevent frozen pipes, allow the faucet to drip slightly and leave cabinet doors open
  • Stock up on essentials:  Snow shovel, batteries, flashlights, extra water, canned food, ice melt

  • ​​Place an emergency box in the vehicle containing items such as a  flashlight, road flares, jumper cables, a first-aid kit, blankets, ​gloves, snacks, and an extra ice scraper
  • Check all fluid levels and refill as needed
  • Check wiper blades and replace if needed
  • Switch out regular windshield wiper fluid with a winter formula
  • Check battery
  • Check tire pressure and tread and fill/replace as needed

  • ​Make sure family members are dressed in appropriate layers before going out in the elements
  • Never leave space heaters and lit fireplaces unattended
  • Bring pets inside
  • Check on elderly family members or neighbors to see if they need assistance with winterizing their homes
