What is the difference between Oncor and my electricity service provider?

  • Before the State of Texas deregulated and restructured the retail electricity market in 2002, only one utility provided electricity in a given area at a time. Since then, about 85% of Texas residents are able to choose a provider in the competitive market.
  • That means lots of options for who supplies your electricity: more than 170 suppliers (known as Retail Electric Providers or REPs) are currently licensed to operate in Texas. REPs buy wholesale electricity from generation companies and sell it to homes and businesses in the areas of Texas that are open to competition. In addition to buying electricity on your behalf, REPs in Texas also handle billing and payment, set prices, and provide customer service.
  • The delivery of electricity remains a regulated monopoly because there's only one set of poles and wires in each service area. That means when you enroll with a REP, a single Transmission and Distribution Service Provider (or TDSP) maintains the poles and wires, handles service outages, and reads your meter. In Coppell, Oncor is the TDSP.

Does it cost anything to sign up?

There is no cost to the residents to sign up for the program, and there is no obligation to switch energy providers.

Am I obligated to the retail electricity provider that wins the bid switch if I sign up to participate?

No, you are under no obligation to switch providers if you sign up to participate.

If I decide to switch providers based on the winning bid, do I have to pay any contract cancellation fees?

If required by your current contract, residents will have to pay an early termination fee with their current provider if they cancel prior to their contract end date.

Why did the City choose to participate in the program?

This is simply a way for the City of Coppell to help residents find the best rates on electricity!

I received a letter in the mail from Texas Power Switch, and it has the City logo on it. Is this a legitimate letter?

Yes, this is a legitimate letter from Texas Power Switch inviting you to join the program. With the approval of the City Council, the City of Coppell has partnered with the Texas Power Switch to help residents save money on their electric bills.

What do I do if I received a letter from Texas Power Switch that was addressed incorrectly?

You do not need to take any action if you received a letter that was addressed incorrectly. Because we value your privacy, the City of Coppell did not provide Texas Power Switch with personal information about residents. Instead, Texas Power Switch opted to purchase a mailing list from a third-party vendor. The City of Coppell cannot guarantee the accuracy of the mailing list that was purchased by Texas Power Switch. Some of the names and/or addresses on this list may be incorrect.

If your utility bill and other official communications from the City of Coppell reflect your correct name and address, there is no need to update your contact information with the City of Coppell.
