Environmental Education Classes
KCB offers monthly classes and seminars on practical green living ideas. The classes tend to focus on growing food, composting, smart irrigation and planting colorful and ecofriendly landscapes. Most of the classes are held at the Biodiversity Education Center, although we occasionally partner with Coppell Community Garden and school gardens in the community to host hands-on demonstrations off-site. All classes are free to the public with no registration required. View current schedule of classes.
Sustainable Home and Garden Tour
Each fall KCB organizes a tour of Coppell gardens to feature the practical implementation of the ideas from their classes. This casual self-guided tour allows you to learn about the real benefits of solar, rainwater collection and Smartscape design in an environment that feels like talking to a neighbor.
The 2016 tour will take place on Saturday, October 1st from 8 a.m. to noon. Pick up your map before 11:30 a.m. from Helping Hands Community Garden at 255 Parkway Blvd. (located in the Town Center parking lot). The first 100 attendees will receive a green living giveaway, but all participants will have the opportunity to be entered into a drawing to win a rain barrel or compost bin. The tour is free to the public with no registration required.
Do you know of a home and garden that would be perfect for this tour? Nominate a friend or apply yourself to be considered for next one. Homeowners who participate will be recognized in our newsletter, invited to a special garden party, and will know that they had a significant part in encouraging others to make practical green home improvements.
Wildflower Seeding
Each October community groups of all ages come together to spread wildflower seeds in designated areas of Coppell parks. Gather your friends, family, Scout troop and neighbors for a fun, free event. Reminisce on what Coppell looked like as a prairie and do the “buffalo stomp” with the herd of seeders.

Clean Coppell
Take an active role in cleaning up Coppell streets, parks, and neighborhoods! Each April, community groups from all around town come together to do litter cleanups and beautification projects. In 2015, residents cleaned up graffiti, painted a mural, planted hundreds of native plants in the nature park, touched up the community gardens, and participated in dozens of litter cleanups. Getting involved is easy! Request a project.
Organize a litter cleanup - Choose a location where you notice a need and fill out a request for clean-up supplies. We will provide trash bags, gloves, and trash pickers upon request. You can do this year-round, but t-shirts will be provided for groups that participate in the annual April event which contributes to a nationwide effort, the Great American Cleanup. Clean Coppell volunteers that that wear their t-shirts to Earthfest get a free treat!
Organize a beautification project – Be creative! If you have a project in mind and the people willing to do it, you can submit an application to have KCB sponsor the supplies. The project should benefit the community through preservation or beautification. Some ideas include:
- Planting a monarch waystation to attract butterflies
- Restoring shared gardens such as community or school gardens.
- Helping an elderly or disabled neighbor meet code requirements for their yard.
- Graffiti removal
EcoCoppell Earthfest
Earthfest is a celebration of Coppell’s commitment to the environment - an entertaining and educational experience! Visit the many environmental education booths to learn how you can lead a more sustainable lifestyle. Don’t forget to shop the plant sale, grab a bite to eat and enjoy a lively performance by Definitely, Maybe.
The fun includes live music, food, artisan and green living vendors, arts and crafts, photo booths, face painting, and interactive environmental education booths. The event also hosts an annual cleanup/fix up station where people can take advantage of free document shredding, bulk trash drop off, and donating household goods.
If you have a green project or product to showcase, you are welcome to fill out a vendor application for the event. In 2017, Earthfest will be on Earth Day, April 22nd!
Individual Volunteers
We hope to see you at one of the programs above! If you would like to volunteer to assist at events like Earthfest or the Sustainable Home and Garden Tour, contact kcb@coppelltx.gov.
