It's that time in North Texas when strong storms can pop up at any time! It's important to always be "weather-vigilant" during not only the Spring and Summer months, but year-round as well.
  • Lightning can happen with all thunderstorms, and if you can hear thunder, you are close enough to be struck by lightning.
  • Known as "Bolts from the Blue," lightning can strike up to 10 miles away from its parent storm cell.
  • A lightning bolt can reach temperatures over 50,000oF--almost 5x hotter than the sun!
  • How far away is the storm?
    • Because light travels faster than the speed of sound, you will see lightning before you hear it. So a good rule of thumb to use is the "Flash-to-Bang" method:
      • For every 5 seconds that elapse between the time you saw the flash to the time you hear thunder, the storm is roughly 1 mile away.
      • Ex) You see a flash of lightning and count 15 seconds before hearing thunder = the storm is 3 miles away.
