OPEN GARDEN DAYCoppell will have its first ever "Open Garden Day" on September 30, 9:00am-1:00pm. Eight gardens will welcome visitors, some that have not been on a tour before, others popular past participants in tours such as the Smartscape tour and the Dallas WaterWise tour. This tour, however, unlike tours of the past, did not limit participation by criterion; it was open to whoever wanted to share their outdoor creative endeavors with the public.
Three gardens have design elements provided by Coppell's own Grow It Land Design, two have been featured in the Dallas Morning News, another was inspired by Monet's gardens in Giverny. All provide the opportunity to enjoy an array of styles, structure, and plants that can inform your choices now and in the future. Fall is the best time to plant perennials, trees, and shrubs because the plant's energy goes into root growth while it is otherwise dormant in the winter. This tour may provide your own inspiration, allowing you to give it the optimum opportunity to flourish in the spring!
Maps will be available at Helping Hands Community Garden at Town Center, 255 Parkway Blvd., on the day of the tour, or on the website, coppelltx.gov/kcb, beginning September 25.
Check back the week of September 30th for the list of adresses.
Environmental Education Classes
KCB offers monthly classes and seminars on practical green living ideas. The classes tend to focus on growing food, composting, smart irrigation and planting colorful and ecofriendly landscapes.
Most of the classes are held at the Biodiversity Education Center, although we occasionally partner with Coppell Community Garden and school gardens in the community to host hands-on demonstrations off-site. All classes are free to the public with no registration required. View current schedule of classes.
Wildflower Seeding
This year, volunteers will have the opportunity to seed areas of Coppell Nature Park as part of the Biodiversity Education Center's Fall Frolic event on October 7th. The seedings are set to begin at 11 a.m. and wrap up quickly so please arrive on time!
Each October community groups of all ages come together to spread wildflower seeds in designated areas of Coppell parks. Gather your friends, family, Scout troop and neighbors for a fun, free event. Reminisce on what Coppell looked like as a prairie and do the “buffalo stomp” with the herd of seeders.
Clean Coppell
Take an active role in cleaning up Coppell streets, parks, and neighborhoods! Each April, community groups from all around town come together to do litter cleanups and beautification projects. In 2017, residents hosted dozens of litter clean-up, spruced up fences, pulled weeds, and handed out plant starts. Getting involved is easy!
Request project supplies.
Organize a litter cleanup - Choose a location where you notice a need and fill out a request for clean-up supplies. We will provide trash bags, gloves, and trash pickers upon request. You can do this year-round, but t-shirts will be provided for groups that participate in the annual April event which contributes to a nationwide effort, the Great American Cleanup. Clean Coppell volunteers that that wear their t-shirts to Earthfest get a free treat!
Organize a beautification project – Be creative! If you have a project in mind and the people willing to do it, you can submit an application to have KCB sponsor the supplies. The project should benefit the community through preservation or beautification. Some ideas include:
- Planting a monarch waystation to attract butterflies
- Restoring shared gardens such as community or school gardens.
- Helping an elderly or disabled neighbor meet code requirements for their yard.
- Graffiti removal
EcoCoppell Earthfest
Earthfest is a celebration of Coppell’s commitment to the environment - an entertaining and educational experience! Visit the many environmental education booths to learn how you can lead a more sustainable lifestyle. Don’t forget to shop the plant sale, grab a bite to eat and enjoy a lively performance by Vocal Trash.
The fun includes live music, food, artisan and green living vendors, arts and crafts, photo booths, face painting, and interactive environmental education booths. The event also hosts an annual cleanup/fix up station where people can take advantage of free document shredding, bulk trash drop off, and donating household goods.
If you have a green project or product to showcase, you are welcome to fill out a vendor application for the event. Email kcb@coppelltx.gov if the application is not yet available below. In 2018, Earthfest will take place on Saturday, April 14th.
