Check out the infographic below to get some quick knowledge facts. Who knows! Maybe it will give you a leg up on trivia nights.

It's that time in North Texas when strong storms can pop up at any time! It's important to always be "weather-vigilant" during not only the Spring and Summer months, but year-round as well.
  • Lightning can happen with all thunderstorms, and if you can hear thunder, you are close enough to be struck by lightning.
  • Known as "Bolts from the Blue," lightning can strike up to 10 miles away from its parent storm cell.
  • A lightning bolt can reach temperatures over 50,000oF--almost 5x hotter than the sun!
  • How far away is the storm?
    • Because light travels faster than the speed of sound, you will see lightning before you hear it. So a good rule of thumb to use is the "Flash-to-Bang" method:
      • For every 5 seconds that elapse between the time you saw the flash to the time you hear thunder, the storm is roughly 1 mile away.
      • Ex) You see a flash of lightning and count 15 seconds before hearing thunder = the storm is 3 miles away.

 Emergency Management News

Check out some of the recent news bits and updates about the Emergency Management field from within Coppell and across North Texas:

October 8-14, 2017
The Coppell Fire Department and Division of Emergency Management is participating in Fire Prevention Month. This year’s Fire Prevention Week theme is: “Every Second Counts: Plan 2 Ways Out!” Life Safety Park will be hosting an open house on October 14th to help celebrate and educate our community members on the different aspects of fire, and life safety. (flyer posted below)

Here are some preparedness suggestions made by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA):
  • Draw a map of your home by using the NFPA grid in English (PDF) or Spanish (PDF) with all members of your household, marking two exits from each room and a path to the outside from each exit.
  • Practice your home fire drill twice a year. Conduct one at night and one during the day with everyone in your home, and practice using different ways out.
  • Teach children how to escape on their own in case you can’t help them.
  • Make sure the number of your home is clearly marked and easy for the fire department to find.
  • Close doors behind you as you leave – this may slow the spread of smoke, heat, and fire.
  • Once you get outside, stay outside. Never go back inside a burning building.
