Page Content: The City of Coppell employs a comprehensive emergency warning program and has access to several tools
that are used to alert the public of emergencies or disasters. It is important to always have multiple ways of
receiving emergency warnings. A single method alone may not provide be effective at all times or in all situations.
- Receive alerts about emergencies and other important community news by signing up for NotifyCoppell, an EverBridge system.
- This system enables us to provide you with critical information quickly in a variety of situations, such as severe weather (with optional opt-in weather notifications), unexpected road closures, missing persons, and evacuations of buildings or neighborhoods.
- You will receive time-sensitive messages wherever you specify, such as your home, mobile or business phones, email address, text messages, and more. You pick where, you pick how.
- We recommend you include a cell phone number capable of receiving SMS text messages, as well as email addresses as less invasive ways to receive non-emergency messages.

- The Wireless Emergency Alert system is a public safety warning system that allows customers who have certain wireless carriers and an enabled mobile device to receive geographically-targeted, text-like messages alerting them of imminent threats to safety in their area.
- The technology ensures that emergency alerts will not get stuck in highly congested areas, which can happen with standard mobile voice and text data services.
- The service is free (i.e. you will NOT be charged for any incoming messages), but requires registration:

- The three types of alerts through this system are:
- Alerts issued by the President of the United States
- AMBER Alerts (missing persons)
- Alerts involving imminent threats to safety of life. In our area, the National Weather Service issues Tornado Warnings and Flash Flood Warnings via WEA.

- The City of Coppell utilizes the ThorGuard Lightning Prediction and Detection System at city parks and aquatic facilities, CISD campuses, and other various public locations.
- ThorGuard Lightning Detectors continuously monitor the atmosphere's electrostatic energy and evaluates the potential for lightning within a 15-mile radius.
- When a detector determines the threat for lightning in the area, a 15-second air horn blast will sound and its strobe light will turn on.
- Upon hearing or seeing these signals, individuals who are outdoors should seek appropriate shelter in a sturdy, enclosed structure immediately.
- When the detector senses conditions are safe, the strobe light will turn off and the horn will sound three short 5-second blasts; normal activity may resume.
- It is important to remember that lightning can occur at any time, even if that dark cloud overhead does not seem that ominous; though it may appear to be clear and sunny where you are, "bolts from the blue" can occur up to 10 miles away from its parent thunderstorm. Therefore, the common sense rule applies, "when thunder roars, go indoors!"
- If you see lightning or hear thunder, halt activity and seek shelter for at least 30 minutes without observing any additional strikes/thunder.

- National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) All-Hazards Radios are used nationwide, and broadcast weather information directly from the National Weather Service (NWS) from a collaborative network of radio stations. During dangerous weather, they are activated automatically by the local NWS Weather Forecast Office (WFO) when the weather threatens their responsible domain.
- The City of Coppell highly recommends that you purchase an All-Hazards Weather Radio with the programmable S.A.M.E. (Specific Area Message Encoding) alert feature, and program it accordingly to deliver weather warnings when issued for our area.
- The most popular consumer brand is the Midland Weather Alert Radio: WR120/WR300
- Most weather radios operate on both an AC power wall adapter and battery backup, which is important for emergencies experiencing power failure, as traditional communication mechanisms (TV, radio, landline phone) will not function.

- There are many different phone applications that offer "push" notification services during severe weather. Some are free, and some cost money. Depending on your particular preference, these apps can be downloaded to your smart phone or other device as a tool for weather warning information.
- Be sure to enable the "push" notification feature, which allows the app to continuously poll for alerts, and set the alerts to an audible tone that will wake you up at night.
- Here are a few examples of phone apps that offer push notification alerts for dangerous weather:
- Many other applications are available for download via the Apple App Store or Google Play, and can be found by performing a simple 'Weather Radio' subject search.
- Remember: downloading a smartphone application is not a substitute to having a working weather radio.
