The Biodiversity Education Center is only open to the public during center program offerings.

Nestled on 66 acres of nature preserve in Wagon Wheel Park, the Biodiversity Education Center at Coppell Nature Park promotes and provides hands-on environmental education. Participants of the education programs, for both school and the community, observe and learn about local flora, fauna, and environmental sustainability issues, as well as develop a deeper connection to their environment through nature.

The Biodiversity Education Center is a “green” constructed net zero building. The project receives power from 96 solar panels and includes a cistern that captures 9,400 gallons of rain water. Landscaping around the Center features Texas native and adaptive plants, reducing water consumption and providing a habitat for wildlife such as butterflies, hummingbirds, birds and bees.

MISSION

To protect the health of the citizens of Coppell from foodborne illness, communicable disease and hazardous materials through routine inspection, education, monitoring, investigation and enforcement of food and environmental ordinances.

Environmental Health protects the public from foodborne, waterborne and other communicable diseases through routine inspections and education.

Food Safety and Restaurant Scores

The City of Coppell Food Program is responsible for protecting the public health by inspecting for food safety in restaurants, grocery stores, schools, daycares and other retail food establishments. A food establishment health permit is required for all businesses or organizations that provide perishable foods, whether prepackaged or non-prepackaged, to the public. Permanent establishments as well as temporary events are required to apply for a food permit, regardless of whether there is a charge for the food.

Texas Food Establishments Rules

City of Coppell Food Ordinance amendments

Certified Food Service Manager:

The City of Coppell requires a Certified Food Protection Manager for all establishments that have employees whose work brings them in contact with the handling of food, utensils, or food service equipment. Click here for more information on Certified Food Protection Manager recognized exams and testing agencies.

Food Inspection Results:

Food establishment inspections are the primary tool for detecting procedures and practices that may be hazardous.  The restaurant scores are used as a tool by the City to place a value on compliance to the regulations, educate the operators, and thereby encourage corrective action.  It should not be assumed that the inspection results reflect how an establishment always operates.

The City of Coppell uses a demerit-based scoring system.  A zero (0) on an inspection report indicated that there are no critical violations in the establishment.  The scoring system used in Coppell is based on the Texas Food Establishment Rules as follows:

0-3 demerits = Excellent (Generally superior in food handling practices).
4-10 demerits = Good (Generally good in food handling practices).
11-19 demerits = Acceptable (Generally acceptable in food handling practices).
20-30 demerits = Poor (Generally poor in food handling practices).
31 or more = Failing (The establishment shall immediately cease operation until corrective action on all identified critical violations is complete).

They accomplish this by providing a highly visible police presence at the High School and Middle School Campuses to which they are assigned. In their capacities as Police Officers, SRO’s Investigate reports of possible criminal activity and take enforcement action when necessary. The presence of a Police Officer on school campuses can be a strong deterrent to criminal activity. Also, a uniformed Police Officer in the schools can be an encouragement to students to befriend a positive role model.

In addition to their primary functions, SRO’s promote safety and wellness to all students through education. The Middle School SRO’s are assigned to the feeder Elementary Schools and visit these campuses regularly. SRO’s offer programs and presentations in the areas of: drug and alcohol awareness, bullying and cyber-bulling, and stranger danger.

The Coppell Police Department's Administrative Division is comprised of three distinct sections: Professional Standards, Training, and Animal Services.  There are fifteen people in the division with four assigned to the Professional Standards Section, three assigned to the Training Section, and six assigned to Animal Services.

The Professional Standards Section is responsible for a variety of functions for the department including fleet operations, public information and media relations, internal affairs, property and evidence room management, CJIS compliance, operation of the SafeLight Coppell program, grants, and quartermaster.  The section is responsible for maintaining our status as a "recognized agency" by the Texas Police Chief's Association Texas Law Enforcement Recognition Program.  The purpose of this program is to demonstrate utilization and compliance with the "best practices" in law enforcement in Texas.

The Training Section is responsible for recruiting, hiring, training, field training of new officers, crime prevention, social media utilization, and coordination of our Citizens on Patrol volunteers.  The section facilitates the department's National Night Out program, which has been recognized as one of the best programs in the nation on numerous occasions.  Section personnel also coordinate other citizen engagement programs such as women's self-defense, citizen's police academy, and Coffee With Cops.

The Animal Services Section is responsible for maintaining a safe and healthy environment for the citizens of Coppell and their pets.  The personnel of the section are responsible for the operation of the city's Animal Shelter where pets can be adopted, stray pets are kept, and animals can be held in quarantine if required.  The Animal Services staff also takes a proactive approach to patrol the city to address violations of the city's ordinance concerning safe and responsible pet ownership, taking enforcement action as is necessary.

Some areas of trail are closed at Andrew Brown East, due to the Andrew Brown Renovation Project. Find out more here

Coppell’s trail system currently consists of approximately 7 miles of concrete and multi-use trails. The system is a master-planned greenbelt trail beginning at the area along Denton Creek in the Andrew Brown Community Park system.

View the Trail Implementation Master Plan
The vision for the continuation of the trails system is to provide easy access at any point within the City, and connect to the regional trail system linking other surrounding communities.

Lightning Prediction System

A lightning prediction system is in place in some of the busier park sites and along some trails within the City. The system is designed to alert park and trail users that the conditions are favorable for lightning strikes.

When conditions are right, the system will sound an alarm. A warning can provided 8 to 20 minutes before a potential strike occurs. The system monitors a 2-mile radius around the unit. When activated, those in the area should seek shelter immediately. The lightning prediction system operates during the hours parks are open, 7 am to 11 pm, seven days a week.

Park visitors should always assess weather conditions before going outside and always be prepared to take the appropriate action needed to ensure safety.

Municipal Court Authority and Jurisdiction

The single most important source of municipal court authority and jurisdiction is the Texas Constitution which gives the state legislature the power to establish courts and their jurisdiction when it sees fit. The legislature exercised this power and first created municipal courts in the Corporation Court Law of 1899. This law has been codified in the Texas Government Code. Municipal courts also look to various other statutes and codes for authority and jurisdiction.
--Provided by the Texas Municipal Courts Education Center

The source of Court of Record Authority is the State of Texas Government Code, Chapter 30, Subchapter L.L.--Coppell. In addition, the following also authorize the Court: Coppell City Code, Chapter 5; 1996 Edition, and Art. 5 Sec. 31 Texas Constitution.
